Allow might be a better term than support...

If somedir is special, generally speaking, that's a potential recipe for DoS
in an ISP environment.
Most packaged ftpd's have at least some patch, configuration option, or
feature flag to limit recursive listing as well as depth settings for
individuals that just learned the power of perl[tm]. It's not the same as
IP accounting and traffic shaping but it can go a long way to making for a
reliable FTP service for people that know the files they want already and
send the pipeline of get vs. spidering your FTP site.
That said, if you are going between your own vanilla ftp client/server setup
it may "just work" in that limited experience.
