Hrm. I was just going by the ncftp manual:

The get command lets you retrieve entire directory
trees, too. Although it may not work with some
remote systems, you can try ``get -R'' with a
directory to download the directory and its con-
tents.

I believe there was an RFC or I-D doc describing the extensions to the
ftp protocol to allow for this; maybe Greg Lundberg? It's been a while
since I paid much attention to ftp.
