Commemorating, perhaps, the first British colony in the New World, at
Roanoke, that disappeared in a puff of same, resulting in a mystery that
has left historians wondering for damn near as long as we Euro-descended
folk have been on this continent?

Remembering the first documented gold discovery in the US, what turned
into the Reed Gold Mine, in what is now Midland, NC? I'd say it was. We
led the nation in gold production until 1848.

If you're talking about the cowboy place, you're thinking of Love Valley,
in Iredell/Alexander counties. Don't drive through town, it's illegal;
also, if you go, make sure your sidearm is loaded at all times (carrying
an unloaded firearm is also illegal). No, this isn't a joke.

Seriously, tho, seems like there was a Marlborough important in early NC
history. Can't remember details now. I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the
Duke of Marlborough that won notoriety in Queen Anne's War, another Duke
named Albemarle (more likely), or if my imagination is making the whole
thing up.

Our state capital's was also named after a man who died from cancer caused
by his tobacco habit. Or maybe it was his oral fixation with brass
instruments. Woo-hoo!

Thanks for the trip down history lane. It's been fun.
