First in Flight doesn't mean NC is the top flying state right now. Kitty
Hawk was the -perfect- skunk works.
Prior to the 1920's(?), NC -- like most of the South -- was primarily a land
of -cotton- going back at least 100 years. The South (including NC) made up
for lost time spent on cotton and was producing multiple billions of pounds
of tobacco which led to control programs. Make no mistake, NC could be
making even more of it. Also, Kentucky just has smaller and more numerous
farms compared to NC not to mention they grow different tobacco (spittin'
kind) and Kentucky agriculture is even more dependent on tobacco than NC
agriculture is today. Tobacco products are expensive because of market
conditions, taxes, and production constraints in the US.
First in Smoke?
Surely, you aren't suggesting we claim NC was "first" at something else?
How about:
1) Currently First in Bright Leaf[1] and Sweet Taters and soon to be Hogs
-Jay
[1] Although you might get agriculture historians to say that SC did it
biggest or fastest ranking -first-
