When I get the auto dial pre-recorded messages, I have started listening =
to=20
the whole message. The considerate companies usually have a "remove me fr=
om=20
phone list" option at the end, which I promptly choose and never hear fro=
m=20
them again.

If the option to "remove" isn't there I do one of two things:

1. If I am in a reasonable mood and have a couple of minutes, I write dow=
n the=20
number and call them with the specific, and fairly stern, request that th=
ey=20
never call back. This is highly effective in removing my number from thei=
r=20
list. it has the added advantage of wasting their time to listen to a ver=
y=20
unhappy never to be customer. Think about it!

2. If I am neither in a good mood or have time to call, I do my private l=
ittle=20
rant about fucking idiots calling me on a "service I pay for" thing, get =
over=20
it, and continue doing whatever it was I was doing with more of an attitu=
de=20
than it deserves. The net effect of which results in an even more stern c=
all=20
to the company that called me without a "remove" option the next time I f=
ind=20
myself replying by phone.

On the whole, I have reduced the amount of nuisence calls we receive by=20
<guess>90%+</guess> by asking to be removed from a call list, whether or =
not=20
it was automated. The downside is that I had to put this much effort into=
not=20
receiving calls I do not want.

So, does anyone think that the idea of a "do not call these numbers" list=
, as=20
recently proposed by the federal government (or was it another ineffectiv=
e=20
body?) is a good idea, or is it just another marketing idea to get hold o=
f as=20
many new numbers to call as possible?
