Paula and Dave,

Both your posts are very right to the point.

Maybe you would like to read the book of a (so far, I haven't finished
it yet) pressumptuous journalist:

The Lexus and the Olive Tree - Thomas L. Firedman

This is a pre-dot-bust, pre-9/11 thing. So it's very funny and sad to
see his "predictions", economic theories (please!) and utterly
disregard for a few important facts:

- Resources (human, capital, natural) are finite

- Humans, as a heard, are as dumb as your herd'o'lambs

He assumes that you can always move your factory and capital to a yet
poorer country, so Fat Co. can increase profit.

But... Someone is going to grow the chickens that you eat, build the
cars that you drive... and you can't keep entire countries as just
cheap labour markets for ever. Some countries will come out of poverty
and won't tolerate being 3rd class citizens of a world where they know
other poeple's standards of living. Violence is cheap and very
low-tech, as it was sadly revealed to everyone in such a sad day.
Disimilar warfare, anyone?

Investors just don't generate by partogenesis. They come from a growing
middle-class. If there are no good jobs around, you get no middle
class, ergo you get rid of potencial investors. And if you keep killing
they future aspirations, with scandalous and flagrantly amoral
behaviour and, in the process, obliterating their savings... do you
really believe that they will trust a corporation to invest in, just
because?

Then, it's also very interesting to see some of his exemplar companies:

- Enron,
- WorldCom
- and, of course, Microsoft

Anyway, now this looks like a rant. But I'm not that happy seeing the
world gone crazy.

Salut,
Josep
