I routinely average $10 per flick. For DVD's, that's pretty darned good.

and b) often scratched [rendering them nearly unplayable on my
ancient hardware].

At last count I had a couple of hundred(+) DVD's, about 90%+ of which were previewed's from Blockbuster. In all that time I only had to return one disk. My population sample is statistically significant. My flawed disc count was less than one percent (statistically insignificant).

As it is, I return 1 out of every 5 or so new DVDs to
the point of purchase as defective.

Maybe you need a new player? I dunno. I got a $150 RCA a couple of years ago and don't have these troubles (anymore). Had them once. Got the player replaced under warranty and now the discs work fine.

Instead, I generally wait until the flick is in the cheap theatres and go
see it for a-buck-fifty. Best of both worlds: bigger screen, cheaper than
renting.

But no rewinds to see what just happened that you missed when you blinked... no pause for pee pee break... no repeat viewings without ponying up again... no watching movies by a crackling fire with a glass of champagne and a warm body cuddled up next to you sans armrest... I could go on. The movie experience is so flat anymore. And with my partial hearing loss, the subtitles on the DVD movies allows me to enjoy films that otherwise wouldn't be as easy to follow in the theater.

Eh, I didn't mind that so much. Yes, I bought them both, in the first few
days they were out to get them on special at BestBuy. ($15 for the
theatrical version, $25 for the extended.) Yes, I'm a sucker.

$10 for the theatrical version for me.

But it's pretty rare that I shell out more than $10 for a DVD.

Ditto.
