the best coverage of this, based of richard florida's book "Rise of the
Creative Class, and How It's Transforming Work, Leisure, Community and
Everyday Life", is out of austin.
http://www.austin360.com/aas/specialreports/citiesofideas/
a very deep set of reporting. but i would ask the question -- do
'creatives' after the tech bubble bust still have significant social
capital to create social change. note the empting of san francisco and
what is left behind. is SFO better off or worse off for having the
'creative' tech boom?

http://www.austin360.com/aas/specialreports/citiesofideas/0512cities50chart.html
list the top 50 creative cities. RDU is number 2!

see also the "Cities of Ideas" section of the readings for my virtual
communities seminar at http://www.ibiblio.org/pjones/jomc391/readings.html

+A colleague of mine is working on a story about this Creativity Index
+phenomenon. (I did a quick search on google and found the following,
+just for folks like me who were out of the loop on this:
+
+It seems that (a) economic prosperity of a particular region is heavily
+tied to the number of creative types that live here and that (b) Chapel
+Hill ranks in the top ten of creative meccas (that is, high on
+creativity but not so hot on diversity...)
+
+Anyway, Richard Stradling is looking to talk to some high-tech creative
+types (thus my posting to InterNetWorkers) who were laid off from their
+high-tech jobs, but are staying put because they love where they live.
+
+Anybody interested in chatting with Richard about the Creativity Index
+and their own perspectives, please drop him a line.

+That's all, thanks.
