well, i cannot say much bad about that and i'll tell ya why;

any support for education is fine by me. and as a weird addendum to this
story,
i add the following (which also is praising MS in some roundabout way);

i recently had the pleasure of attending a NC LIVE seminar held for reference
librarians on the campus of NC School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.
wow.
let me say that again;

WOW. it was held in their fairly new technology center. there were at least
50
killer PCs with large (19"?) monitors sunken down in the actual desktops with
keyboard/mouse trays. all running WinXP and a variety of current development
software. in the front of the room were two huge projection screens that
allowed the presenter to display pretty much anything they wanted. i was
overwhelmed;

the kids would come in (at their leisure) and "authorize" themselves by
logging
into a laptop at the back of the room - this machine gave you "rights" on one
of
the available PCs. holy cow;

i was thinking "gawrsh... if only we could ensure that every school in the
country had such facilities...". upon further investigation, a large portion
of
the funds for that project came from an NCSSM alum who *had* worked at MS. i
emphasize "had" because i got the impression that they no longer "had" to
work.
also discovered YET ANOTHER large computer lab adjacent to their small,
extraordinary library;

also donated by a former MS employee. *this* type of information makes me
very
happy. i might not like the way MS acquired all that money, but if insane
wealth
can go to support more of these intense technology education campaigns, then
maybe i could turn a blind eye to the occasional browser glitch. ;) and it
was
this time that i realized i had been closing my paragraphs like perl
statements;

it is worth mentioning that i saw no signs of linux on campus, however, i
feel
assured that the tuxVirii swells strongly somewhere amongst the teen masses.
also, it is unfortunate that such a disparity exists between schools like
Duke
and NCSSM getting these types of donations and the larger majority which have
little to no exposure to that stuff. the looks and comments from librarians
who
came from some of those poorer counties around NC about that technology
center
were very, very enlightening;
