One of the reasons I posted the link was there didn't seem to be any clear
harassment, and the point of the NYT even running the article was that the
complaint was against a technology company, which according the article, were
supposed to be immune to "that sort of thing." As we all know, technology
companies aren't immune to anything, and certainly have the potential for the
same faults as any other type of company.

There were three separate issues from the article. First, an entry level
person was dating a senior vice president, which was deemed OK by the rules
of the company since they worked in two separate departments. Normally
harassment is when the
person you having a relationship is manipulating your job situation, and in
this situation, the person bringing the complaint is upset because her lover
wouldn't intervene with management on her behalf.

The second complaint was that her boss was treating her differently from the
other programmers. From her own descriptions, it sounded very much like she
was treated as an entry level programmer. Some of the complaints were almost
identical to my own complaints as an entry level worker who simply had a bad
attitude. I don't know how it was where you work, but junior programmers
aren't invited to every design meeting. The other complaint, about not
receiving specifications on time, is universal. In fact, very few places I've
worked give out any specifications at all, and I've never seem specifications
finished on time.

The third area of complaint is that of a sexist work environment, which may
be true. The problem with these types of complaints is it varies so much with
the individual. I've worked one place where one guy's use of sexual language
was so graphic I felt uncomfortable, and another place where a female manager
insisted that all images of women be removed, even pictures of wives on men's
desks, because society at large was oppressing women.

I do believe sexual harassment exists, and there must be better examples of
it than this to print.
