If you want to do X10 cheap, there was a Mac version that would run on
hardware as old as a Mac Plus. How much computing power do you need to send
an electrical pulse to turn lights on and off? What is neat is the old
compact Macs are very small, simple, and I am sure someone will give you
one.
Unfortunately, the name of the App escapes me. Someone else may remember it.
I will defer to the network professionals to advise you on your ethernet
network. If all you use is a notebook, you may be happier with wireless
ethernet, though.
