The mill owners watched life in the mill housing very carefully and imposed
their own morals under threat of dismissal. The company stores could
function as high-profit moneymakers and also as a means of binding workers
to their employment through debt. In the stories I've heard, one mill owner
used to prowl the streets at night ordering people to turn out lights
(electricity was included in the rent).

But that was long ago. More to our time and place, nearly twenty years ago
the prez of a large local privately-held software firm revealed to his VP's
a plan that had him in a very large house on a hill, surrounded by the
large houses of the VP's. Since the man went into real estate in a big way,
he may have achieved his dream by now.
