Having only really worked on non-death march projects, all I can offer is some
academic experience. Seems like Frederick Brooks wrote an entire book on the
subject of what happens on a large software project. And while the Mythical
Man
Month has a place within every business person's business-conscience, it's
possible that not many people have actually read it. All the problems
discussed
in the original problem definition (i.e., There's never enough time, the
salespeople oversold, the management never has a clear grip, the architecture
is broken, the Alpha-Geek-Emperor has no clothes, etc.) are addressed in the
book to some extent. While it was originally written twenty or more years ago,
and doesn't specifically cover OOP (which I am assuming is usually the basis
for million line programming projects), the latest version does some mention
of
it.

It may not make things that much easier, but at least it isn't throwing "Who
Moved My Cheese" at the code monkeys to justify changing expectations.

And I mean code monkeys in the very best sense.

Jesse

Lotion and the Basket: The Online Journal of Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb. Lovely
fun.

From the most recent entry:
"I really should do some catching up. I'll put it on my list of things to do.
I'm really behind on poking Catherine with a stick. Oh, funny story. Her
birthday was the other week, and I totally made her think I'd forgotten it.
She was crying... "I mean it! Let me out, you freak!" which is totally how we
talk to each other. Anyhoo..."

Check out the "Ask Catherine" entry. Yes, Jame and I have been discussing
whether or not I should return to the Web.

Beth
