Oh yeah, there are a number of lists and newsgroups that have thousands of members and have been around forever. I'm referring to the smaller groups like ours, which tends to be the kind I gravitate toward. It's more close knit and not as hard to keep up with.

I also prefer not to have separate "off topic" forums. I like the fact that conversations can take a left turn, but it doesn't work well in larger groups (I agree that in a very large group there should be a separate list for that). In a smaller group, it can be fine, but it does take some awareness on everyone's part as to when it's gone too far, and when it might be alienating to new members.
