It all depends on elevation. I loved the Pinyon/Juniper in southern Colorado. I would image that to get that kind of habitat in SW NM you'd have to be fairly high up... 7000+ feet.
Here is a link to typical Pinyon/Juniper landscape:

I certainly do miss the West.

Robert,
Your place sounds awesome. I think for us easterners and midwesters... we need some pics. I thought New Mexico was a desert?

Greetings all,
I've been lurking and enjoying the list for quite some time. Was really saddened when it mostly shut down.
The wife and I live on 16 acres of pinyon juniper woods in southwestern New Mexico. We've cleared a bunch and planted about 150 grape plants.
Put in a pretty large kitchen garden and canned over 300 quarts of produce this year. Pumpkins too.
We have three mules that we've driven for two years now.
We also do a bit of logging and milling so we can build the home. Nowhere near done with that.
There's more that I'd have to think about to remember.
I've really enjoyed learning from and being entertained by you all and especially have appreciated James, Don, Gene, Lynda, Jeanne, and most everyone else.
Warmest Regards,Robert Iliff
