Yes, you really do need to thin it out that much, I had a peach tree
that I had neglected to do this on, split down the middle of the trunk
from the weight of the fruit. If you have trained it to an open shape, as
you are supposed to, this is a real danger. The limbs will begin breaking
off as well. Yes you will have a lot fall off naturally, but by then the
rest of
the fruit will not grow much more. The nutrients it has spent on the lost
fruit are wasted. Thinning early means larger fruit.

Hey all,

I'm new to this aspect of the orchard. I've got 3 peach trees and a
nectarine loaded with fruit. I'm have the understanding that I should
thin the fruit to about 4 to 6 inches apart. That's a lot of thinning.
I took some off the nectarine today, it's a younger tree, ready to
bear, but not what it had on it. The peach trees are just loaded. To
get a fruit every width of my hand, I'm going to need to remove lots
of fruits. I'm sure that some of the fruit will drop naturally, also.

Anyone have experience thinning fruit off peach trees. Is it really
going to improve fruit quality? I can see limbs breaking off if I left
all these little fruits on.
