A standard city lot is all that is needed for sustanance "homesteading." I
mean, sure, more would be better so that you could grow your own grains but
bottomline, you could get by quite nicely on a city lot.
That depends on the city. A "lot" in a rowhouse section of Philadelphia is 16x70', and the house takes 16'x50' of that., leaving a little piece of dirt behind the house, shaded on 4 sides by 3-story buildings. I was lucky enough to have the 2 houses next to me torn down, so I had a 32x70 lot (still shaded) to garden in.
The Dervaes actually sell a lot of what they produce. They are a great example of what can be done with a small amount of land.
