Myabe this is normal, but I've never had volunteer tomatoes from
compost, before. One year, I had a very nice crop of "small
potatoes" from a compost pile; but never tomatoes. Huh ???
I've had all kinds of volunteers from a cold compost pile. Tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos(all the time) onions, garlic, potatoes, and even a broccoli plant (from thinning). Of course, all my kitchen waste is composted, so hopefully one day I will find a coffee tree or a lemon tree. <vbg>
It probably won't grow true to type, but there is nothing wrong with trying it out and seeing what happens.
