That pretty much sounds like what my grandmother did !   Mom said, that they
even pressure canned them more than one.... and that you pretty much know
right away if they aren't going to work, seals bust.

Thanks..   I just didn't want to 100% rely on mom's memory..... LOL she
comeds up with some real doozies some days!

SSSShhhhhhh. Don't tell, o.k. I reuse my lids. Not suppose to but I
haven't had any failures. Now, what I do is that I use them first for
pressure canned and then for steam canning (kinda like a boiling water bath
but much easier, here's a link about them
http://www.canningpantry.com/steam-canner.html). I use them sometimes 3, 4
or even 5 times. I check the rubber gasket thingy real well and if after
washing it pops back and doesn't look like it has a permanent indent in it,

I figure they are good to go. The last few times I use them I use them on
salsa and then on jelly.

Does anyone here re-use them? (The lid part)

I know the instructions say to not reuse them, but my grandmother did all
the time.

Anyone know of success/failure rates?

When my husband was a kid his family was really poor and couldn't afford his
glasses. The local Lions' Club chapter had eye glasses that they collect from
people who didn't need them anymore, prescriptions changed or the owner died,
and he'd sort through them until he found a pair that worked for him. I
imagine this sort of thing will become commonplace again if times get really
tough. We still keep all old eyeglasses to donate but haven't found a place
to bring them yet out here. They might not be a perfect match for someone in
need, but they'd sure be better than nothing if you really need them.
