Before the white farmers using European and American business models had made
Zimbabwe the "bread basket" of soutern Africa. It was very much a net food
exporter. The people of Zimbabwe had access to this food cheap, abundant an
cheap.

When the farms fell into the hands of the cronies of Mugabe under the guise
of land reform, the new owners had no expience, no business model, no
financing, to carry them through. Moreover, they though that if they just
held the
land, the money would come into their bank accounts unbidden as they were
convinced it had been for the former white owners.

The farms fell into ruin. The populace, used to several generations of
market food provided by the former farm owners, had and have no idea how to
subsistence farm.

The former farms were not subsistence. They depended on great amounts of
imported machinery, diesel, and fertilizer all purchased through world
banking.
None of Mugabe's bunch can find a co-signer. They have no international
credit.
