I thought it was a bad idea when Lee Iacocca got his bailout, but he
did pay it back and kept AMC alive for a few more years.

I don't understand why US automakers have refused to pay attention to
the world market; that hasn't been a problem for foreign automakers,
including those making cars in the US. OTOH, hasn't the quality of US
cars gone up? Does anyone here have a newer model (say less than 5
years old) car and do you consider it well or badly made?

I've been quite happy with my Dodge pickup, which has done well with
regular maintanence (except for blowing its rear seal, fortunately
while still under warranty). It's coming up on 15 years of service,
some of it heavy. Perhaps pickups are not a good example; I think US
automakers have a good reputation in that area.
