Fortunately, my animals that died at home had a peaceful death...i.e. no obvious suffering, just sort of drifted away. I think that's the way I'd prefer to go. I try to be with them and comfort them. My last dog died at the vets, while being treated for an infection (unsucessfully, obviously). If an animal was suffering, I'd take it to the vet to be put down (I don't own a gun, and I'm not sure I could use it on a pet if I did).

Chris and I are contemplating our next dogs and cats at Heartwood. We
were sad but felt we did the right thing, having Dax euthanized by the
vet. I am still very unhappy about shooting a cat that was obviously
in pain and dying. I am interested in your thoughts on what you feel
is the best way to end the pain and suffering of pets.

I do not want the perspective of those who feel that we should not
have emotional connections with dogs and cats.
