Looking at the stover from the front, in the upper left hand corner, the edge
of the firebox, the two threaded pipe fittings would be the water jacket.
You can use it or ignore it. It's a passive system that circulates the water
slowly by the hot water displacing the cooler water in the thank.
How-some-ever, it it isn't done properly, the tank could blow. The ten
gallon reservoir
gives us plenty of hot water without the complication and caution of the
water
jacket. Don't ever touch those pipes, they are HOT.
My grandmother had a Majestic as well. When I was a small child, the firebox
looked enormous. But when I looked at this one, and others we visited, I
said, much as you, "You've got to be kidding! Why did they make such a tiny
firebox??"
But in actual practice it's no problem. Once the damper is closed, the
cooking surface heats by drawing the smoke and gasses through the small space
between the cooktop and the oven. If the firebox were much larger, there
would
have to be a hell of a fire in there to get really hot smoke under the
cooktop.
As it is, with the small firebox, a few twigs gives you a hot cook surface in
a quick hurry. In cooking a big and complicated meal, I may have to toss
another piece of wood in the box one or two times before I'm done.
Having said that, if I had two similar cookstoves to choose from and one had
the size firebox that mine has and one twice that size, all other things
being
equal I'd choose the larger firebox. But otherwise it wouldn't be a deal
breaker.
