Don, why did the house Democrats not pass their own plan? I never said it was
good or bad, I don't know. I just stated the absolute fact that the House
Dems, alone without any republican help, can pass whatever plan they choose.
If they are ceratain, the first compromise plan or any other plan they choose
is good for the country, then they should act like adults, take
responsibility, and pass their own plan. Instead of sending silly people
like Barny Franks and (my favorite Martian) Harry Reid out to
whine about how the power of the minority Repubs is somehow clogging the
works.
If the house dems, who absolutely have the numbers already; are unwilling to
vote for their own plan, then one of thwo ideas come up. Either they don't
believe in the merits of their own plan; Or, 'they' are pulling a political
stunt, just looking for political cover.
When you are the party in power, as the Dems now are, you must act
responsibly. If you don't, you will lose that power. .....bobford

As for the Paulson plan, there were many problems, the amount that by
treasury admission was "just a big number", the total lack of oversight, no
protection for the government investment, and last but not least no idea if
it would work or not.
The compromise worked out fixed some of those things. The installment plan
seemed like a good idea to me, start with $350B and if that worked, add
more. Oversight of the treasury actions, equity stakes, etc all were
reasonable fixes to a very flawed plan. It was at least something.
But McCain had a back channel meeting then went into a meeting he requested,
said very little but let surrogates torpedo the whole plan. Now they have a
new plan that includes little more than the old repugnican favorites, tax
cuts and less regulation.
Republicans, the party that wrecked America.
