Hi, Sue -

As I've said before, I am not a bona fide homesteader but I live every day
in the hope that I will be someday.
I am 66, and my 'significant other' is 82. He lives 400 miles away, just
outside of San Francisco, with his sister - who is 81.

They care for their 106 year old mother. We speak openly about her passing,
and on the one hand - we are anxiety-stricken that it will happen - and, on
the other hand look forward to the final freedom it will give us. I get
'down'
sometimes at the possibility that she will outlive us all, and she will be
dancing on our graves, while we have accomplished relatively nothing. She is
a
lovely lady, and I can't fault her for wanting to stick around - she raised
two wonderful children on her own and probably feels she still has to keep
an
eye on them.

There is little at this point that I can do to simplify my life, except
wait...and accept each day as it comes. If I were already in my 'ideal
situation', I suppose simplification would consist of being able to wake
every morning
to the pre-dawn cock's crow, knowing that there wlll be fresh eggs for
breakfast. Knowing that butchering and canning and pickling will ensure that
no
matter what the winter brings, my little circle of loved ones will have food
on
the table. Knowing that I'm smart enough to educate my children (now
grandchildren) in the basics, at least, and teach them how to survive.

I would like to get up every morning and know that I don't have to leave my
house - or my property - for any of the basic necessities of life. I would
like to spend my day knowing that there's no human need that cannot be
fulfilled
right here, be it food, shelter, education or love.

These are my 'simplifications'.

how have you simplified your life?

thanks!
