Thank you so much for asking that! I am anxiously waiting to learn, too.

I am completely ignorant of high finances: how will this affect people
not buying or selling a house, who have no money in the stock market and
very little in the bank?

Collards overwinter well.
Do you want to overwinter, or just plant for "Fall"
I can just about keep the brassicas alive through January here..you might
think about that.
Some peas will produce in winter-fava types, other peas you can plant now and
they will germinate in Spring. Of course, I can plant carrots now, and you
can probably squeeze in another crop of radishes and beans before a good
freeze. Plant things like rhubarb and asparagus, any fruit/nut trees you
can find, etc. Buckwheat, Wheat....

Other than garlic, onions, and spinach (?), what could I plant now to
overwinter?
All the talk around here (sw VA) is that it's supposed to be a hard winter
this year. Do I need to protect the garlic and onions? I believe I've read
that I need to put a row cover on the spinach. Is that right?
What else could I do now in or for the garden? We've recently started a new
compost pile.
Thanks.

Oh, thanks Linda. Reminds me of words my mom used to say after dinner
(noon meal) on Sunday, while Dad was napping. I had a good laugh.
Sometimes I think we all need that. A good laugh helps just about any
situation.

See what happens when you wake up dad just before beer time! I already
told
you children to play nice or you'd get a time out! ~~sigh~~ The
children
simply never listen.
