If you can, you should see if you can find a book called, Oh Yea. I am not
sure who it is by, but it has all the statements by the big shots in the last
depression about everything being alright and not to worry. I think it would
be interesting, but I have never been able to find it.

I think there is a contingent of the population that will remain confident
if only because one of the 'higher ups' in the Admin. said so. These
are
perhaps the same people that consumed because they were told by Bush and
Greenspan to do so.
The caveat is that some of those very people lost jobs and/or are so deep in
debt they've run out of money - and options. You can't even fall back
on
declaring bankruptcy, that option changed drastically a couple years back.
So perhaps they won't necessarily take Paulson and Bush at their word.
My contrarian instinct has all the red flags raised high. Confident, my Ash!

..Welcome Sue, to the Homestead List, where there is more yakking about world
events and ultimately politics than there is about homesteadin', but we do
try. :) Many of us have been on the list more than 10 years and we know each
other pretty well, almost like family. You know how sometimes you will cut
your friend some slack, but not your family? That is kind of the way it is
here. But we do all pretty much love each other..except I think Bill really
does hate Lynda..lol..where is Bill anyway?
Sounds like near Aberdeen, Bigfoot country...beautiful out there on the
coast. I have family across the river from you down in Astoria.
To answer the question, there is no way to hide from Uncle Sam within the US,
not in this day and age. Of course, if you live in Afghanistan and or
Pakistan and your name is Osama, then you have a good shot of avoiding Uncle,
but otherwise, we just aren't that fortunate. <g>
What I mostly try to protect myself against are those that might inherit
power after a disaster or collapse or those 'refugees' who might retreat from
more urban areas. Having all that data at the fingertips of the
government-things like Carnivore and RFID info and digital phone conversation
and digital tax records, etc. etc. etc. is a double edged sword. Now, in
'normal' times, all I can do is to try to prevent them from accumulating more
info and to try to reduce my digital footprint. It makes sense to do that so
that criminals don't get your information, too. However, if the world went
to hell, say, Al Qaida or Russia or China took out our satellites or set off
an EMP or nuke, then guess what??? All that stored digital data would be
gone into cyberspace. If it wasn't destroyed, at least it would be difficult
to access with the lack of electricity, parts, generator fuel, etc. Assuming
I survived the calamity, that period of no information
would buy me time to assess and determine whether or not I need to relocate
to the caves<g> or build a boat to get out of the country or whatever....
Do I feel safe? No.
Do I hope that I am just paranoid and thinking crazy things like this? Yes.
Am I? Only time will tell. Gambling on it, though, it is always better to be
prepared-both physically and mentally-than not. I think I get more "out
there", as Lisa says, every year, and that scares even me.

Oh, I'm sorry, Dad, if I took it too far. I have a lot of fun jerking
people's chains, or trying to find out how much leash can be let out,
before the situation is found to be totally ridiculous. I think Bob
does, too. I will try to play nicer in the future.
By the way, I have some absolutely wonderful North Dakota stories, if
any of you like good yarns, with just enough truth in them to be
plausible. I like to see how long I can string rubes along.

Awright, this has gone far enough. I figured you were both joking but
I see that at least one of you is serious. Obtuseness is, in fact, a
word.
obtuse |ÉbËt(y)oÅs; äb-|
adjective
1 annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand : he wondered if the
doctor was being deliberately obtuse. See note at stupid .
⢠difficult to understand : some of the lyrics are a bit obtuse.
2 (of an angle) more than 90° and less than 180°.
⢠not sharp-pointed or sharp-edged; blunt.
DERIVATIVES
obtusely |ÉbËt(j)usli| |ÉbËt(j)usli| adverb
obtuseness |ÉbËt(j)usnÉs| |ÉbËt(j)usnÉs| noun
obtusity |-sitÄ| |ÉbËt(j)usÉdi| |ÉbËt(j)usÉdi| noun
ORIGIN late Middle English (in
the sense [blunt] ): from Latin
obtusus, past participle of obtundereâbeat againstâ (see obtund ).
