Bob, our friends could be described as intelligent liberals with a musical and artistic bent who enjoy good food and a healthly lifestyle. (That probably describes a lot of the folks on the list). They are all about five years ahead of us, already having retirement money and having finished rennovating their farm houses. We spent time together talking ideas, making music, cooking for one another. I'm not saying other factors in moving weren't involved, such as proximity to family, creative opportunities, etc. But apparently they needed something more. They were never as self-sufficient as we are. Maybe boredom was a factor?

Please elaborate, if you please. I am confused why your "like minded" friends with whom you socialized moved away to socialize with someone
else with similar (to you) like mindedness. Are they just moving to a metro area for the arts and nightlife. I am confused. Thanks...bobford

In retrospect, the other thing I might put on that list is a place where there is some evidence of like-minded people. Two of the three couples with which we socialize have moved/are moving thousands of miles away, to be closer to more people like us. They underestimated the social isolation a rural life can bring. Again, if we didn't have the Internet connecting us to our friends,
we might not be able to handle it either.
