Other than being distant from perishables my homestead doesn't provide, like good cheese, I don't miss the proximity to shopping. I can find almost anything I need or want on eBay for less and have it delivered to my doorstep, and enjoy cutting out the middleman and reusing or recycling something.
So, after 7 years of homesteading, I would now say I could not live without a connection to the Internet.
In retrospect, the other thing I might put on that list is a place where there is some evidence of like-minded people. Two of the three couples with which we socialize have moved/are moving thousands of miles away, to be closer to more people like us. They underestimated the social isolation a rural life can bring. Again, if we didn't have the Internet connecting us to our friends, we might not be able to handle it either.

Way Out in Texas
Access to shopping is something I hear friends around here talk about. Even before rising gas prices. It would be most interesting for we homestead listers who have homestead property to make a list of the ten most important things to us regarding location of home. I suspect that criteria changes after one has been in a place for five or ten years.
The only thing I seriously do not like about Heartwood is biting insects. It is notable that insect population was not on my criteria list in 1976. If it had been . . . ?
