When we lived in the city, many long years ago, we lived exactly 4 buildings from the police station. Home with the kids and a brand new baby, the kidlets and I heard someone trying to get into the basement. I called 9-1-1. TWO HOURS later someone showed up. Then he wanted to know why I turned the dog out on the guy. Well DUH!, like you guys were any help!

In my experience, having lived in a few different places, calling 911 is the
last thing I want to do when I need something to happen NOW. Like as not ole
Barney Fife will show up a couple hours later with his gun drawn. I'd have
called 911 if I had to shoot an intruder, for sure! :-)
Seriously, if I depended on cops to show up timely for my protection ... I'd
be insane. Even in the cities in Illinois the response time is not fast.
Here, the sheriff's department is many miles away. The police are better at
trying to catch a murderer (although there are many of those unsolved too)
than they are at arriving fast enough to prevent one.
