However, I would certainly expect the author to disclose in advance that
he/she is a friend (or ex-husband, or brother) of the person whose garden (or
business, or product, or book) is being profiled.

Do you write and publish stories about gardens that belong to
friends? Have you ever had an editor refuse a story (or an
assignment) because the garden was a friend's garden?
