I have never used DE but I believe the recommended method of application is dusting and the best tool to use is a Dustin Miser. If you buy one, it's worth the extra money to get the end attachment that allows control of the flight pattern of the particles. The idea is to coat the leaves with a fine coating - that does the bugs or worms in from both the inside and the outside. You have to sprinkle it on the larvae directly. If you do it after every rain and/or two or three times a week, it will seriously cut populations. --You may never have had an infestation so heavy that walking the beds with a bucket of DE was practical--I was growing a total of five acres of potatoes, all in pretty close proximity to each other. It was part of the control program--removing leaves with egg masses was the other, and probably more essential, control. |
