I have not had any luck with DE for slugs, but it's been very effective for potato bug larvae. You have to sprinkle it on the larvae directly. If you do it after every rain and/or two or three times a week, it will seriously cut populations. --You may never have had an infestation so heavy that walking the beds with a bucket of DE was practical--I was growing a total of five acres of potatoes, all in pretty close proximity to each other. It was part of the control program--removing leaves with egg masses was the other, and probably more essential, control.

From my long ago research, there are two types of DE.

One type is used as a filter material for swimming pools and the
other is sold as an insecticide.  The swimming pool type has been
treated so that the edges are no longer sharp and the product is
useless against slugs and snails.  The ag type is supposedly
effective but personally, I've never found it to make much difference.
