Martin Frobisher is a nice, even-toned pink. It
has an upright nature and lends itself to pruning into a standard. William
Baffin (David's better known brother in Canada) is more of a deep pink, sort of
a flat faced flower with a yellow centre.
I agree with Maryann that the Explorer series is
one that Hampton should consider. Perhaps Alexander MacKenzie would work- bright
red with a bit of yellow at the petal base; Champlain, which can be trained as a
climber- which can make it difficult to keep as a tidy shrub as can John Cabot.
Cuthbert Grant has the most beautiful of buds- so deep red they almost appear
black- but opens up, again, into a bit of a flat flower-
semi-double.
Anyone of these should work nicely in Hampton's
garden. They were developed in Morden Manitoba and Ottawa Ontario to be cold
hardy and disease resistant. Big Plus- all are own-root roses.
