I have one of the Canadian Explorer Roses—either
David Baffin or Martin Frobisher, that grows in an old horse corral where the
deer habitually graze [the gates are all open]. It puts on a wonderful show
every year without any help from me. Maryann Maryann Whitman Editor, Wild Ones Journal Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural

Er....baby
deer have a habit of having a mama deer around too and rarely do deer travel
alone. As
for roses: we inherited a Jackson and Perkins 'Hansa' (one of the few things
here with a tag still on). It is large, but prunable; I have never
sprayed it but had no black spot etc.; and it does seem to survive quite nicely
along with the deer and other wildlife around here, of which we have an
abundance. I do think that its age helps though - it is thorny and most
of the branches were >1" diameter. It is growing in zone 5b. Kate Copsey |
