I have one of the Canadian Explorer Roses—either David Baffin or Martin Frobisher, that grows in an old horse corral where the deer habitually graze [the gates are all open]. It puts on a wonderful show every year without any help from me.

Deer are not an issue at this location and neither are Japanese beetles.  Had one deer in the past year...a fawn that fell asleep on my back porch.

Er....baby deer have a habit of having a mama deer around too and rarely do deer travel alone.

As for roses: we inherited a Jackson and Perkins 'Hansa' (one of the few things here with a tag still on).  It is large, but prunable; I have never sprayed it but had no black spot etc.; and it does seem to survive quite nicely along with the deer and other wildlife around here, of which we have an abundance.  I do think that its age helps though - it is thorny and most of the branches were >1" diameter. It is growing in zone 5b.
