Hi Melanie:
    I have often used the newspaper/soil method to start new beds and it has worked wonderfully. Although I've never tried it under trees, so can't give an opinion there.
    The newspapers add carbon to your compost, which is great if you don't have a lot of leaves or other 'brown' material to add at any given time. Shredded, it breaks down very quickly.
