Marge,
I do not get black spot on any rose, even the finicky hybrid teas, because I
inoculate them at planting with mycorrhizal fungi. It helps immensely.
Also, black spot isn't the end of the world, especially with shrub and
landscape roses. The leaves drop, you pick them up and dispose of them and
the plant grows more leaves.

About Rouge Royale, specifically, I've never had a disease problem with it.
And, the Japanese beetles seem to leave it alone, too.

I live 80 miles west of Carolyn who is near Lake Michigan in a northern
Chicago suburb. I'm on the WI-IL border where we get more heat, more cold
and more sun than Chicago. Carolyn is in Zone 5a, and I'm in Zone 4b.
