There used to be a block-long vacant lot with a small ditch running at streetside. Ditch was about 12" across, maybe that deep too, and half full of running water. Every summer day there were at least four boys playing at ditchside. Sometimes putting things in the water, then racing to catch up with it, diverting part of the water, etc. Then the block was developed. They should just leave some blocks undeveloped. Preferably with running water.
Actually, dirt is great, throw in a few disposable pie plates and you have
some truly happy kids! They're always making mud pies here.
Trickling water is good! Today we took the cover off our monstrous in-ground
pool but the girls are shrieking out on the front lawn under the "good old
sprinkler". Also done today? Cleaned their compost area, slathered
themselves with sunscreen and announced they were going to "take a tan"
(don't worry, not one could lay down for more than five minutes), picked and
ate strawberries (didn't bother washing them), made magic potions (dirt,
berries, leaves, seed pods and more), rescued Hosta seedlings from the front
lawn, had a picnic lunch, and sang on the tops of their lungs as they
marched about. It's only 4:00 and there's so much more to do.
Hmmm, wish I were a kid again!
