Gee Larry, they find the dirt all on their own :-)

Actually, dirt is great, throw in a few disposable pie plates and you have
some truly happy kids! They're always making mud pies here.

As for sandboxes, there's lots of concerns as some of you have posted. Not
only cat feces but much worse, raccoon feces. We have many raccoons in our
neighborhood. Just the other day my Mom took my 10 year old to a friends
house. They're raising baby raccoons (supposedly licensed). I went up to our
wildlife rescue station to check on them. #1, no license, #2, anybody who
let a child hold and play with baby raccoons would loose that license
immediately. Raccoon feces carry a number of diseases that I was told attack
children's eyes and spines.

We also have a dozen beaches within 20 minutes of our home (Long Island) so
sand boxes aren't too special.

Trickling water is good! Today we took the cover off our monstrous in-ground
pool but the girls are shrieking out on the front lawn under the "good old
sprinkler". Also done today? Cleaned their compost area, slathered
themselves with sunscreen and announced they were going to "take a tan"
(don't worry, not one could lay down for more than five minutes), picked and
ate strawberries (didn't bother washing them), made magic potions (dirt,
berries, leaves, seed pods and more), rescued Hosta seedlings from the front
lawn, had a picnic lunch, and sang on the tops of their lungs as they
marched about. It's only 4:00 and there's so much more to do.

Hmmm, wish I were a kid again!
