Melanie: I live on Ontario, not far from Toronto.
We have a very large country garden that we have had on garden tours, and open
garden days, and as a result I have collected a mailing list (mostly e-mail
now).
We have a plant sale once a year on a couple of
days in mid-May, and people on the list get invited. They often bring friends,
which adds names to the list. Originally, we grew a lot of perennial for
our garden (particularly native plants), and we sold the excess. My husband
still grows a lot of alpines.
Now it's a bit of everything: seed grown plants,
divisions, and wholesale plants I buy for the sale. It works well for us and people are happy with the prices. There are
bargains, but we have steadily increased the prices of the plants we grow,
and the plants I buy for the sale have a regular mark-up. I think the fact that
it's an invited sale of people interested in gardening that makes it different.
It avoids that 'garage sale' mentality of getting people who are only interested
in a bargain basement prices.
We don't want to be a nursery, but we open our
garden to visitors regularly, and it's nice to have a few plants to sell. People
seem to love to take something home with them.
