I see. Then you're in luck, because you have *many* choices:

* tsql
* bsqldb
* freebcp
* sqsh (http://www.sqsh.org/)
* ShellSQL (http://www.edlsystems.com/shellsql/

Any of these is IMO superior to isql, not least because they're designed
for your purpose and remove one layer of mediation.

The idea behind bsqldb is to have a batch sql processor. Take a look at
the error and message handlers at the end of src/apps/bsqldb.c. Any
error received from the server with a serverity greater than 10
terminates the process. If you have problems with it, well, you know
where to find me.

OTOH, now that Frediano has confirmed it's an isql deficiency, perhaps
someone will fix that....
