The short of it is that now it works. Thanks very much for your patience
and insight.
The long of it is that I had not actually tried tsql with the -S option.
Sorry, didn't mean to mislead you. When I did try it though, it worked
fine. Surprisingly, my /etc/hosts file was configured properly.
The trick was the TDSDUMPCONFIG. Very cool! It seems that we copied our
server entry in our ../etc/freetds.conf from a machine that was using the
../interfaces file. I added the [] around the server name, and of course
TDSDUMPCONFIG gets a match everytime. I'll try to be less of a bonehead
next time :-)
