In other words, it is quest for forgiveness and mercy apart from knowledge of reality? No, that makes no sense. David speaks unequivocably there: *no man living* is righteous in some sense. And yet he is confident that he can appeal to God at another point of contact. Paul cites David; commentators are pretty much agreed that Rom 3.20/Gal
2.16 is an allusion to Ps 143.2. Of course, Paul, in line with his
eschatology, tweaks the citation, moving it from "no one living" to "no
flesh." This reflects his view that life under the old creation is not
life, but death (see the parallels of Sin and death in Romans 5).
There is no dilemma, because Paul clearly intends
throughout to show that Jesus is the one human being who has been under flesh
without being sinful. Yet even *His* flesh comes under the judgment
of death. It is precisely because He falls into the spotless category that
He is a sin offering that *exhausts* ("fulfills") the "righteous sentence"
(dikaiwma) of Torah against sin (8.3-4).
Whatever your sensation, that is not Lutheran
exegesis.
