I also think that you would do well to do some work beyond the explicit NT
and Pauline studies to consider how ethos is understood within contemporary
rhetorical theory. As a starting point there is:

Ch. Perelman and L. Olbrechts-Tyteca, The New Rhetoric: A Treatise on
Argumentation (U of Notre Dame Press, 1969) especially section 70 on
"Argument from Authority" and 72 on "The Speech as an Act of the Speaker"

James S. Baumlin, Tia French Baumlin, Ethos: New Essays in Rhetorical and
Critical Theory (Southern Methodist University Press, 1994) with full
bibliography
