A couple of other suggestions of stimulating 'alternative' discussions
of 'sacrifice and atonement in Paul'- well worth a read and quite concise:
Gerd Theissen, 'Soteriological Symbolism in the Pauline Writings', 159-186,
in
his 'Social Reality and the Early Christians: Theology, Ethics, and the World
of the New Testament' (Fortress, 1992)
Gerd Theissen, 'The Sacrificial Interpretation of the Death of Jesus and the
End of Sacrifice', 139-160, in his 'The Religion of the Earliest Churches:
Creating a Symbolic World', (Fortress, 1999)
Christopher D. Marshall, 'The Arena of Saving Justice - The Justice of God in
Paul and Jesus', esp. 35-69, in his 'Beyond Retribution: A New Testament
Vision for Justice, Crime and Punishment', (Eerdmans, 2001) - Marshall makes
an interesting case for understanding 'Justification by faith' as restorative
justice.
