Dear Moon,

Just a brief response to your comments on Rom.5-8. As you outline your view, you seem to be sticking rather closely to the chapter divisions- I am not too happy about separating ch.7 from ch. 8 . I am also reminded of Nils Dahl's article outlining the parallels between 5:1-11 and 8:1-39 in his Studies in Paul. In determining whether Jews or gentiles are being addressed it is also relevant to look at the differing styles and modes of argument-Otto Michel in his Romans commentary long ago drew attention to two differing styles in Romans- a confessional-proclamatory style and a dialogical-rhetorical style. It is interesting to check where the 'we' references tend to occur; also Paul's rhetoric in diatribe style may need to be carefully deciphered before we decide who is being addressed by whom-as Stan Stowers has demonstrated. I have argued that we need to give some account of the ovearrching structure of Romans as a whole whenever we deal with individual sections or chapters ( Paul's Gospel in an Intercultural Context); despite the abundance of commentaries available, much work remains to be done to enable us to be more precise about who is being addressed and where; more precision is required, otherwise we are left with the contradictory attributions already noted in recent discussions on Galatians.
