Sheila,

I've had some positive responses on the journal and being on an editorial
board from Bill
Campbell, Don Garlington, John Hurd, and Jim Hester. I've written to Karl
Donfried -- but
so far no response from him. Have you contacted and/or heard from any of
those you listed
above?

I'm enclosing below a series of proposals from Mahlon Smith to the XTalk
staff about what
might go into a maiden issue of the proposed HJ Journal. Do any of these
proposals strike
you as something we'd like to parallel?

And one other item. Do you have an online or attachable map file which gives
outlines of
Roman provinces and indicates major cities in the Roman world in the 1st
cent. CE? I'm
intending to give my Paul students a map test and I need something with this
material on
it.

Thanks,

Jeffrey

Thinking back over Funk's launching of FORUM & Fourth R for Westar, the
first issues were mostly filled with programmatic & other introductory
matters. So it might not be unrealistic to post a maiden issue that
included: (1) An editor's introduction to the scope of the project; (2)
a state of the question essay (or series of essays) on historical Jesus
scholarship in the last half of the 20th c. The current issue of FORUM
has critiques of Sanders, Wright, Vermes, Meier, etc. Someone might want
to engage these or offer alternative assessments; perhaps (3) one or
more narrowly focused articles on some important question about HJ or
his world; and/or (4) an essay about either historical methodology or
some aspect of the quest BB (Before Bultmann).

This list is meant to be suggestive, not prescriptive. If we can get 4 or
5 top quality essays we'd have more than enough justification to publish
ASAP.

Shalom!

Mahlon
