Greetings
I am looking for the current thought concerning Paul's opponents at
Philippi. I have Chris Mearns NTS article on the topic and I would like
some imput from list members.
Who are the opponents in Philippians 1:28; 3:2; and 3:18?
Do the opponents of chapter 3 equal those in 1:28?
Do the opponents of 3:2 belong to the same group as those mentioned in
3:18?
Are the opponents of Philippians 3 the same group throughout?
Here are some random thoughts on the topic:
Are they the same in 3 and 1:28? There seems to be outside suffering
(1:29-30), they threaten his life (v.30), so 1:28 are outside the church
and threaten the believer's life. In 3:2-19 the threat is spiritual not
physical (15-19), the issue is who to follow as examples (17-18), so Php. 3
opponents operate from within the church and are a spiritual threat.
Conclusion: two different opponents.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
