Seeking list members' advice on understanding /
translating Col 4:4 (hINA FANERWSW AUTO hWS DEI ME
LALHSAI). It relates to my work on mission expectations in Pauline
Christianity.
Does FANERWSW refer to the manner (hWS) in which
it is necessary to announce, ie., 'making it clear'.
Or is FANERWSW basically in parallel to LALHSAI and the hWS
simply 'causal' ("so that I might disclose it, since I am obliged to
announce".
The similar (and perhaps intentionally parallel) clause at the
end of the next paragraph (v.6 - EIDENAI PWS DEI hMAS ENI EKASTW
APOKRINESQAI) is clearly refering to the 'manner' in which it is necessary for
believers to answer each one. Ought this push us toward the first reading of v.4
if the grammatical/syntactical possibilities remain open.
The commentaries are, not surprisingly, divided.
Hoping for some new insights/parallels from you all.
Many thanks,
John Dickson
