John,
You may already be aware of this, but if Ephesians is dependent on or has
some knowledge of Colossians, this would have a bearing on your question
and tend to support reading hWS as signifying manner. Eph 6:20 has the same
last clause hWS DEI ME LALHSAI and employs this clause to indicate manner,
making this clear by having PARRHSIASMWMAI instead of FANERWSW in the lead
into it - "that I may speak of it boldly and openly as I ought to speak."
Our earliest interpreter of Col 4:4 would then have understood it to be
referring to disclosure in the appropriate manner - "that I may disclose it
as I ought to speak," i.e. boldly and openly.
